CD Review: Saxman McCabe can take it easy, or give a song some bite
By Bob Karlovits |
Alto saxophonist Alexander McCabe can move easily on "Quiz" from an easy-going "Weezie's Waltz" to numbers that put a little edge on his clean sound. "Lonnegan" and the title track are not testing in their style, but they never settle down, either. Even the band's version of "Good Morning Heartache" is played with a little more tension than usual. The songs are driven by keyboardist Uri Caine, the demanding drumming of Greg Hutchinson, the bass of Ugonna Okegwo and, or course, McCabe's sax. He has a crispness of sound and a vocabulary that fits well in the newer pieces, but can settle back to an easier sound on "How Little We Know."
